Bee stingBathe area in bicarbonate of soda or soap. Remove sting if visible.If the sting is in the mouth or throat region contact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately.
BleedingControl bleeding by placing clean bandage/cloth over wound and applying firm pressure.Contact Veterinary Surgery immediately
BloatPotentially life threatening. Stomach could be bloated and can twist.Contact Veterinary Surgery immediately.
Blocked AirwayTry and remove foreign material if possible but beware of being bitten. For larger objects the Heimlich manoeuvre can be performed. With the animal placed head downwards, administer a sharp blow just behind the breastbone towards the chest. If no cough is induced, then with hands on both sides of the chest wall, press firmly to squeeze. Repeat up to 5 times.Contact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately.
Broken bonesRestrain dog and keep injured limb still. Do not try and splint.Contact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately.
Burns & scaldsCool immediately with ice and water for at least 10 minutes. cooking fat can be removed with a cold water/detergent. Do not dress/bandage.Contact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately.
DrowningFree airway of any debris. Lift dog by hindlimbs to drain water from lungs. If not breathing, place on side and push chest firmly. Close mouth and blow gently up its nose.Take to Veterinary Surgery. Dry and keep warm on transit.
ElectrocutionSwitch off electricity. If this is not possible then use a wooden stick (e.g. broom handle) to move away.Check tongue is pulled forward to allow breathing. Push on chest every 5 secs. to induce breathing. Close mouth and blow gently up the nose. Transport to Veterinary Surgery.
FitsProtect dog from injury, but avoid mouth. Avoid any noise, and darken room.The actual fit should not last for more than 2 minutes. If longer contact Vets for advice. An appointment for a full examination should be made.
HeatstrokeStart cooling with ice & waterContact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately.
Insulin overdoseSmear glucose solutions e.g. jam, honey, sugar solutions on tongue/gums as long as swallowingContact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately
ParalysisWith spinal injuries, avoid any sharp jarring movements. A strong sheet can be used as a stretcher.Contact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately
PoisoningBring all evidence to surgery including container with poison information.Treatment depends on specific poison. Do not make sick without seeking veterinary advice first.
Wasp stingBathe sting site with vinegar.If the sting is in the mouth or neck region contact & bring to Veterinary Surgery immediately.
