Veterinary Care Assistant

Monday to Friday – 40 hours per week

Reporting to Head Nurse / Deputy Head Nurse

We have a fantastic opportunity for a dedicated, enthusiastic and customer-focused Veterinary Care Assistant to join our friendly team at our Castle Cary practice in this full-time role.

In this varied and rewarding role, as a Veterinary Care Assistant you will provide essential support to the day-to-day running of the practice, learning the core principals of veterinary nursing, developing your knowledge and whilst developing the skills to deliver excellence in customer service and clinical practice.  You must be able to demonstrate empathy, kindness and compassion, whilst also being calm and confident under pressure and will perform a variety of duties, such as:

  • Understanding and implementing the practice organisation, services, standard procedures & policies
  • Reception duties, including phone answering, maintaining a friendly & helpful approach to clients
  • Assisting the veterinary nurses & veterinary surgeons as required
  • Inpatient care:  feeding & watering them as directed, exercising them as directed, general care including mental stimulation
  • Restraining animals
  • Cleaning of kennels
  • Replenishing consumables in clinical areas: prep room, theatre, kennels, cattery, pharmacy area & consulting rooms
  • Ensuring the practice is kept clean & tidy, including outside
  • Pharmacy dispenser: putting up medications and getting them countersigned
  • Theatre runner – keeping both prep room and theatre clean & tidy at all times, assisting both veterinary surgeon & veterinary nurses as needed during procedures
  • Cleaning & packaging of surgical kits, drapes, swabs
  • Washing & drying of animal bedding
  • Booking of operations and procedures onto the practice management system
  • Undertaking appropriate internal and external training associated with the role
